Asbestos is from purely engineering standpoint a material with unusual properties - very mechanically resistant, insensitive to high temperature and chemically inactive. Because of these characteristics asbestos is today found in a vast number of products, mainly (but not exclusively) building materials.
Unfortunately, asbestos material is also a highly hazardous substance, causing lung diseases such as asbestosis or lung cancer and asbestos-specific tumor type - mesothelioma. In the case of this tumor mortality of patients is close to 100%.
The only way to eliminate asbestos as a risk factor is:
- determination of the presence and quantity of products containing asbestos
- Environmentally sound and lawful removal and disposal of these products.
